Most DesiOut members are genuine and trustworthy people. However, there may be a few bad people out there, just like in the ‘real’ world. Below are some general instructions about best practices for ensuring your safety.

  • Always meet in person with anyone you're dealing with; it's a simple way to steer clear of potential scams.
  • NEVER make or accept payment before meeting in person.
  • Do not share any financial information, such as your bank account number, pin or secret code.
  • Do not disclose any personal information, such as your Social Security number, licenses, or job references.
  • Do not consider requests to send money via wire transfer.
  • Do not consider requests to deposit a cashier's check.
  • Do not consider requests to pay using gift cards.
  • Scammers often tempt people with deals that seem too good to pass up.
  • Examples of common scams/frauds:
    • If the price seems too good to be true, it's likely a scam.
    • Scammers aim to make you desperate to close the deal quickly.
    • Scammers will avoid in-person meetings and pressure you to make payments online.
    • Promise to ship the item to you
    • Scammers try to manipulate your emotions to make you feel sorry for them, so they can deceive you into giving them your money.

Phishing is a type of scam designed to steal personal information, including account details, passwords, and financial data. You might receive messages that seem to come from DesiOut or it's members, asking you to:
  • Click a link or share personal details
  • Complete a form on another website
  • Download an attachment
These are phishing attempts by scammers trying to trick you into revealing your personal information. If you receive an email claiming to be from DesiOut asking for your personal information, do not click on any links included in the message. DesiOut will never send emails of this nature. Any emails that create a sense of urgency and request personal details should be approached with caution, regardless of who they seem to be from. Website pages can easily be forged.

  • Meet in a Public Place: Choose a well-lit, busy location like a café, shopping center, or public park to ensure safety and visibility.
  • Bring a Friend: Whenever possible, bring someone along to accompany you during the meeting.
  • Share Your Plans: Let a friend or family member know where you're meeting, who you're meeting, and when you expect to return.
  • Stay Alert: Keep your personal belongings secure and remain aware of your surroundings during the meeting.
  • Trust Your Instincts: If something feels off or uncomfortable, trust your gut and leave the situation immediately.
  • Limit Personal Information: Avoid sharing sensitive personal details like your home address, financial information, or other private data during the meeting.
  • Avoid Cash Transactions: Whenever possible, avoid handling large amounts of cash. Consider using secure, traceable payment methods instead.
  • Confirm Details Ahead of Time: Verify the meeting time, location, and contact information before heading out.

  • Set Boundaries: Be clear and firm about your boundaries. If someone is making you uncomfortable, tell them to stop and remove yourself from the situation if necessary.
  • Do Not Respond: Avoid engaging with the harasser. Responding can encourage more harassment or escalate the situation.
  • Block the Sender: Use your email provider's features to block the harasser’s email address. This can prevent further unwanted messages.
  • Report to Authorities: If the harassment is serious, threatening, or includes criminal behavior, report it to law enforcement. Many countries have laws against cyberstalking or online harassment.

  • In the online world, it's always best to stay cautious and avoid placing blind trust in others. Take a moment to use your best judgment and consider things carefully before making any decisions.
